NEW FORMAT FOR HUSKERLAND 29
The bracketing for Huskerland 29 will be done after weigh-ins have been closed. Basically it will be done like most clubs run there events only a bigger scale. Weigh-ins will start two hours before the scheduled start time for wrestling in each grade division and close 30 minutes later. We will use 6 scales and wrestlers will be assigned to a scale alphabetically. That will give our TrackWrestling master, Dan Vacha, 90 minutes to pair that grade group. Dan will pair the wrestlers into 8-man brackets. Where possible he will not pair wrestlers from the same club in the same bracket and have not more than one returning Champion of Champions in the same bracket.
This does several things that we feel will be good for this event: (1) No more DQ’s for being over weight ever! (2) No reason for anyone to try to cut weight with this format. The rationale for why we don’t have set weight classes was to encourage our youth wrestlers to compete at their natural weight. This allows coaches to concentrate their efforts on technique and not weight cutting. (3) The actual weight difference of the wrestlers in each bracket should be fairly close. (4) Outside of the bookend weight classes we shouldn’t have any byes.
The drawbacks we feel will be minor. Wrestlers that fail to be on time for weigh-ins will not be bracketed. We cannot allow those who are not responsible to get there on time make us re-bracket and push back the start time of that session. It does force everyone to be at the site a full hour sooner than we did this past year. Wrestlers won’t know whom they will wrestle nor the mat they will wrestle on until shortly before they wrestle. We are hoping to have brackets posted on TrackWrestling 30 minutes before the start time.
